This year as WIMBIZ celebrates 15
years of impacting and empowering women, we launched the Big Sister Program
which is designed to promote girl child education. The program will equip and
empower 1,500 young girls in 3 states with life skills that will boost their
confidence and build their leadership capacity thereby preparing them for
post-secondary education.
The Big Sister initiative kicked
off in Lagos with a Training of Trainers in an effort to train and prepare the
mentors ahead of the program. The program went on to hold in three (3) local
governments; Eti-Osa and Mainland LGA on Wednesday, May 25
and in Surulere LGA on Wednesday, June 1.
Beneficiaries of the program were
mentored by accomplished female professionals in various fields who have a
commitment to the development of the girl child. Sessions at the training
includes; Building & Developing Self Confidence, Preparing for the Next
Level and Owning Your Space. 448 young girls were mentored in the Eti-Osa and
Mainland Local Government areas and 352 in Surulere Local Government bringing
the total to 800. Our next phase is to reach girls in Port Harcourt and Niger State.
Based on feedback from the mentors, we have
selected 44 girls in total who performed exceptionally during the sessions for
further leadership training which will further equip them with the skills, tools and information required for their personal development while in school and post secondary education. The training will hold in partnership with LEAP Africa on Friday, July 22 and Saturday, July 23, 2016. Students from all participating
schools have been invited to submit essays on what they consider their school’s
pressing need and the schools with the winning essays will be awarded the funds
during a small closing ceremony.
